Summer Staycation: Great Jones Spa

Great Jones Spa

Let’s face it, this winter was brutal. Odds are if you’re a New Yorker, you’re still spending every morning standing in front of your closet, layering yourself for schizophrenic weather conditions. As you sift through a mix of sweaters, boots, open-toes and tanks, it’s easy to wonder if summer is ever coming. Personally, by the time I make it to my local Starbucks, the thought of having to choose between an iced latte and a hot one is almost too much to bear.

A tropical getaway naturally comes to mind, but when am I going to find the time? Working on Fashion Avenue isn’t your typical “nine to five,” and by the time I finally leave the office, it’s a race to make my evening Soul-Cycle class. Not to mention that whole “needing to eat to survive” thing.

Well, my fellow New Yorkers, what do we do? How do we break away? It took a little digging but I think I may have the solution. Why not pamper ourselves with a little staycation? I’m not talking about sitting on the sofa with a glass of wine, watching reruns of Scandal. Please. I’m talking a real getaway in your own city! The idea is not a novel one, but inspired to research, I have my answer: Great Jones Spa.

Open until 10:00 pm and located in the heart of NoHo, Great Jones Spa offers a full menu of massages, facials, hair care treatments, and a spectacular water lounge visit included with each package.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first venture, but several smiling hosts reassured me—they quickly checked me in, offered a glass of fresh lemon water, and escorted me downstairs to a women’s lounge. The area was equipped with private lockers, showers, and all the spa necessities—white robes, sandals, lotion, shampoo… you get the picture.

I picked the hot stone massage I’d heard so much about—it was breathtaking. Exactly what I needed to take me out of New York and into a Bahamas state of mind. If you’re considering this treatment, it’s totally worth it. Estheticians place hot stones on your back, the palms of your hand, and between your toes, and the heat causes your muscles to immediately relax. According to the person I worked with, it’s a perfect way to improve circulation and keep your body centered.

After my much-needed massage, I ventured down to the water lounge, which includes—drum roll please!—sauna, cold plunge, steam room and hot tub. If there is a heaven in New York, it is Great Jones Spa. The ambiance is beautiful, warm and relaxing. I completely recommend it for your next New York staycation.

A Walk on the Wild Side

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

We love a good animal print! Why? Because it’s one of the most versatile ways to add instant glam to any outfit. You can wear it at any age, at any time of year, in any form—skirt, heels, pants—you name it!

And summer is the perfect time to experiment with different prints (girl, let’s face it, a tan makes everything look fabulous!). Experiment with a sleek python print or an exotic leopard to add a little extra ferocity to your wardrobe.

Skyrockets In Flight: Our Top Five Firework Displays

What’s not to love about the Fourth of July?

Every summer, “America the Beautiful” gathers for backyard barbecues, poolside cocktails and fireworks displays that light up the night sky. And that gives you a thing or two to decide: In addition to dreaming up the perfect red, white and blue ensemble, you’ve got to select the best location from which to view your explosives show of choice! In the name of Independence Day, we’ve picked our top five favorite locations from which to view July Fourth fireworks across these fifty United States.

New York Fireworks
1. New York City, New York

An obvious choice, the Big Apple delivers an Independence Day show like no other, courtesy of Macy’s department store. The nation’s largest fireworks display fires off this year from the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River, a major departure from the show’s historic Hudson River location—a move calculated to allow more New Yorkers to enjoy the show from more points around the city. Show begins at 9:00 pm.

boston fireworks
2. Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular definitely comes in with a bang! Launching early, on July third, on the beautiful Charles River Esplanade, this ten-thousand-fireworks-strong extravaganza is the whole package: cannons, concerts and fighter jets galore! Fireworks begin at 9:30 pm.

Washington D.C. Fireworks
3. Washington, D.C.

A check off that old bucket list – who wouldn’t want to enjoy Independence Day from our nation’s capital? This has got to be one of the most breathtaking views for the Fourth of July (Psst: the best viewing areas are located on the Mall, near the Washington Monument). Check it out. Light show begins at 9:10 pm.

Chicago Fireworks
4. Chicago, Illinois

Hello, Chi-Town! This year, Chicago’s Fourth of July Freedom Fest takes place on the rooftop at Navy Pier, the Windy City’s purported Independence Day hot spot. The event will feature a full bar, BBQ and a live DJ. As this is an event for all ages (though not the bar part), be sure to get your tickets in advance. Fireworks launch at 9:00 pm.

San Francisco Fireworks
5. San Francisco, California

Featuring free entertainment and a fabulous fireworks display, Fisherman’s Wharf is hands-down the best place to celebrate the Fourth of July in good old San Fran! With Independence Day celebrations taking place all day long, the Bay Area is totally the place to be. We suggest grabbing a spot at Pier 39! Fireworks launch at 9:00 pm.

“It’s a smile, it’s a kiss. It’s a sweet sip of wine, it’s summertime!” (Lyrics courtesy of Country Star Kenny Chesney) And no summer is complete without the perfect anthem, one that captures moments and memories that last a lifetime. Beachy sunsets, bar nights that end with dancing on the tables and road trips to the middle of nowhere are that much better with a rocking summer playlist! From us, to you: Our Top 10 songs of Summer 2014. Listen, love.

Caché Summer Playlist

#10  Happy by Pharrell Williams

Some of you no doubt have a love/hate relationship with this pick, but how can a body not move when this song comes on? Follow-up question: Who doesn’t want to be happy?

#9  A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay

Arguably one of the best bands of all time, Coldplay has taken their music to a whole new level by mixing the lyrics and style we love with eclectic club beats. We’re loving this track and strongly suggest dancing the night away to it under (of course) a sky full of stars.

#8  Love Never Felt So Good by Michael Jackson ft. Justin Timberlake

We couldn’t leave the King of Pop off the list, and Justin Timberlake brings his special something extra. Apologies to Happy, but this may be the ultimate feel good song.

#7  Problem by Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea

Ariana Grande has really started to take off and we’re huge fans of her sound and style. This song, featuring Iggy Azalea, is destined to be the girl power anthem of the summer.

#6  Beachin by Jake Owen

Hottie alert! Not only is Jake Owen (very) easy on the eyes but this song is an obvious playlist pick. His lyrics celebrate the things we love about the beach: friends, crashing waves and cold cocktails. We’re thinking this tune should stay on repeat while you’re sunbathing on the sand.

#5  Loyal by Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne & Tyga

As you may know, Chris Brown’s ‘tude has gotten him into a little trouble this summer but this song is so catchy. And anything featuring Lil Wayne = instant hit.

#4  Ain’t it Fun by Paramore

We love Paramore. And this song is all about living in the moment. Ain’t it fun, living in the moment? (Answer: YES.)

#3  Latch by Disclosure

The perfect club spin, when this song comes on everyone hits the dance floor. It’s catchy, it’s fun and the beat is phenomenal!

#2  Fancy by Iggy Azalea

That Iggy Azalea is so feisty! Or should we say fancy? Talk about breaking the mold. The video takes us back to the 1995 hit movie Clueless and ladies, who among us doesn’t love Clueless? This song is a straight-up summer hit.

#1  Summer by Calvin Harris

This song is our top pick for Summer ’14, and we’re betting we’re not the only ones who feel that way. Calvin Harris does an amazing job with this mix—there’s a minute and a half long instrumental that will have you jumping up and down and the lyrics never, ever mention winter—we’re listening to it every chance we get.
